THE BEAT
GOES ON: A MUSICAL JOURNEY
Lifelong
musician, DooWop Denny, draws from a deep vein of rock & roll history to deliver
an authentic rockin oldies show with a room
full of smiling faces and plenty of fun on the dance floor. Denny's guitar and vocals
are linked to a tablet synthesizer, creating
a big-combo sound with a kind of "magic that melts the years
away" for the over-60 generation. Six decades of entertainment
savvy have schooled Denny to connect to his audience with a 300-song
hit-parade of feel-good 50's, 60's, 70's favorites. Rock & Roll. Island Tunes. Slow Dancin'. Vintage Country. And your special
requests.
Home based in Florida most of the year, and Colorado during summertime,
the DooWop Denny Show gathered a loyal following over the years
with weekly appearances in Venice, Florida, and
summertime shows in the Colorado mountain towns of Dillon, Frisco, Silverthorne
and Breckenridge. Bookings included community events, resorts, clubs, cruise ships, anniversaries, and private
gatherings.
A "MOTOWN" KID IN THE FIFTIES: EARLY ROCK & ROLL
Growing
up in suburban Detroit, Denny found himself immersed in the sounds of Motown early-on,
connecting to that music and its solid Beat.
Piano lessons, that most kids steered clear of, became his first steps on a lifelong
journey of music, rhythm and song.
The pulse of rock
& roll was sweeping the nation, powered by a cool new sound: The Electric
Guitar.
Inspired by "rockabilly" pioneers, Carl Perkins and Buddy Holly,
Denny
learned basic licks and chord progressions on his first
guitar.
Next step: rhythm player in a high-school rocker trio named the Jades, doing
instrumentals (later called "surf music") by The Ventures
and Duane Eddy. Although no one in the band could get up the nerve to sing,
the Jades somehow twanged their way to first
place in the school talent show. The thrill of
performing on stage before a live audience took hold!
THE SIXTIES: PETER, PAUL & DENNY?
Denny's college years brought a transition to acoustic guitar and folk sing-alongs of the Kingston Trio era. But unplugged music just didn't pack
the
Beat and adrenaline-rush of rock. It wasn't long before
Denny dusted off his electric guitar and teamed with new musician friends,
forming the D-Fenders, a cool combo of Fender guitars, bass and drums.
Microphones were added for upbeat vocals from Chuck
Berry, to Roy Orbison, to the ultimate party song, Louie Louie.
The D-Fenders were popular on the college circuit, playing to university audiences and
ruckus "Animal House" frat
parties. Summer road trips highlighted the college years
as the quartet woke up tourist towns all over the Great Lakes
with their backroad gigs.
"TRUE LOVE" - A NEW THEME SONG?
In 1966, Denny's love for music suddenly met up with True Love, the real thing, when he found the girl of his dreams, Mary Alice. Marriage, family and daytime career became higher priorities than rockin' & rollin'. Amps, mikes and sound gear were cashed-in for furniture in the newlyweds' first home… Denny and Mary Alice and their two kids lived happily ever after. But hold on... There's more to the story...
THE SEVENTIES: HONEY, THERE'S A BAND IN THE GARAGE!
Fast forward a few years. The family and daytime career
were on track. But that rockin' Beat imbedded in Denny's roots kept bubbling to the surface. Jamming the oldies with friends, neighbors, or
anyone who could carry a tune was
a frequent weekend happening. It was "garage band" noise, but a
good time for
those who dropped by the house to
listen or play along.
Eventually, a trio of
thirty-somethings smoothed out the jam-band chaos
and named themselves Cobb Creek Revival.
Their specialty: Any excuse for a party! Songs of Neil Diamond, Dion,
Three Dog Night and a medley of vintage fifties & sixties hits resonated through the years.
THE EIGHTIES: MIDDLE-AGED MEN MAKIN' MUSIC
In
1981, five middle-aged
guys, with similar backgrounds in the Detroit-area music scene, got together and formed Rockin' Gold, a nostalgia showband. Phil,
the drummer and a melodic genius, created intricate 4-part vocal harmonies and was the driving force behind the group.
Complex melodies of the Del Vikings,
Eagles, Beach Boys and Beatles were added to the classic oldies playlist.
Weekly
rehearsals in Denny's basement music-room produced a crisp, finely-tuned
mix of jukebox memories
that audiences loved. Appearing in gold-lamé
jackets, Rockin' Gold side-stepped the late-nite bar scene, but they
enjoyed a
variety of gigs at country clubs, festivals, and private parties around metro
Detroit.
GREAT BALLS OF FIRE... DENNY RETIRE?
It was great while it lasted...12 years together. But the sound of Rockin'
Gold fell silent when two of the band members moved from Michigan. In
the nineties, Denny retired from the
business world and settled in the Florida sunshine, but a life of leisure, soaking up rays, somehow wasn't quite enough. The Beat
was still in
his
head and just wouldn't go away!
Tinkering with computers
and music, Denny discovered he could create tracks of instrumental sounds and
blend them together to simulate a live
combo. By playing his guitar along with this background
music, he had created a "virtual band" and could sing his favorite
tunes
again!
What began as a "techie" hobby turned into the next chapter of
his life.
On a balmy Florida evening
at a neighborhood party, Denny's new vibe drifted across the pool among
smiling faces and folks dancing under palm trees. The music flowed through him,
and the thrill of performing for a live audience had returned...
DooWop Denny was "born." Today the Beat goes on...
from Motown to Memphis to Margaritaville... Let the good times roll!
